How would you describe your Executive and Leadership Coaching?

I would say that my coaching is all about building a true one-on-one, highly supportive but challenging relationship with my client based on trust, honesty, openness and accountability. I am your safe and confidential sounding board, confidant, mentor, guide, growth champion and challenger!

We create a safe, confidential environment together where you can step back from the day-to-day operational pressure cooker, speak candidly, reflect, take stock of the present, explore options and future direction and consider what needs to be done – whether that’s about changing yourself and how you lead, or changing something in your business.

We focus with razor sharpness on the topics that are most important for you to consider or address and through exploration and discussion, agree a plan of action going forward. As your coach I hold you accountable for this plan so that you achieve the result you want.

Finally we evaluate the benefits of your coaching, what still needs to be done and celebrate our success!

How can coaching help me?

My aim is to help you build and honour the strengths you have as a person and leader, help you decide what you want to change – both in yourself and in your business – take a realistic view of what can be achieved by when and then to help you formulate a plan to make the change happen.

I can help you improve as a leader even if you are already the CEO! I specialise in enabling people to make a successful transition to a bigger or more complex role. Clients often report that I bring clarity to complexity, have a razor sharp ability to help them focus on what really matters, ask the ‘killer question’ that really makes the difference and ultimately challenge them to change their thinking and behaviour.

What experience do you have?

I have a unique blend of over 30 years experience of working in and with many of the world’s most well known brands at senior leader level, coupled with a deep understanding of human and business psychology gained over the last 20 years. This combination makes me a powerful force for change – whether that is in how you think and behave – or in how your business operates, engages and manages stakeholders or connects with your markets and the world.

I have coached at CEO, COO, EVP, SVP, MD, Director, Head of Function/Region/Business area/Product line in a comprehensive range of multinational and global companies across a broad range of market sectors including:

  • Banking
  • Construction
  • Energy
  • Finance
  • Food and Beverages
  • Healthcare
  • Manufacturing
  • Not for profit
  • Professional Services
  • Technology
  • Telecommunications
  • Utilities

I also coach emerging leaders and high potential individuals and the owner/founders/senior leaders and managers of high growth, entrepreneurial SMEs.

As the work I do is highly confidential and often subject to Confidentiality Agreements, I am happy to provide the contact details of previous clients from whom you can seek assurance.

What qualifications do you have?

I do indeed have a range of formal qualifications which are detailed below. However, what I consider to be of more value coaching at a senior leader level in complex businesses or with the owner/managers of fast growth entrepreneurial SMEs is the comprehensive  understanding I have of ‘how business works’.

This range of experience coupled with my knowledge of the psychology of people and business, means that I can work with a wide range of business matters including reviewing strategy and strategy deployment, organisation structure and effectiveness, barriers to growth, marketing and sales, social and digital media, leadership capability, working well in a matrix, stakeholder and relationship management, personal impact and effectiveness.

As someone who has started and run three businesses and helped a mid tier management consultancy significantly grow sales, I can offer the owner/managers of SMEs a significant amount of support.  That might be at the initial start-up phase to the challenges of phase 2 and 3 growth where innovation and pace are key to gaining and retaining market share or prosecuting new opportunities.

I initially qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and worked as senior management level in local and central government and within the property group of a major bank before starting my own Chartered Building Surveying practice in the UK. I have an MSc (TA Psych), am a Master Practitioner of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), have a diploma in Business performance Coaching and a Certificate and Diploma in Life Coaching.  I am a member of the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs, the Association of Coaching and am an approved Department of Innovation and Skills Business Mentor.

Is the coaching process confidential?

If you are paying for the coaching then everything we discuss is confidential although I do have certain legal obligations to report such matters as money laundering, child abuse etc.  I will clarify these with you when we agree to work together.

If your company is paying for the coaching they are my client and you become in contacting terms, the ‘service user’.  In this case we enter what is known as a ‘three-way’ contract between me (coach) the organisation (client) and you (coachee). In this situation we have a formal written agreement usually captured in a Coaching Contract which details what topics will be covered in the coaching programme, what will remain confidential between the coach and coachee and what will be reported back to the organisation. We also agree and write down what outcomes are expected from the coaching and how success will be measured.

In my opinion, a well scoped assignment, clearly contracted which includes limits of confidentiality, outcomes required and how they will be measured is essential to set the coaching up for success.

Do you work to a Code of Ethics?

Yes, I comply with the Code of Ethics and Good Practice published by the Association of Coaches http://www.associationforcoaching.com/pages/about/code-ethics-good-practice

Do we have to meet face-to-face or can you coach me by telephone?

My preference is to meet you in person usually once a month for about two hours. I like to be able to use all of my senses to gauge how you are, identify the unspoken and take a real time temperature check of you the person!

Where geography limits face-to-face meetings we can make use of the telephone, email and web conferencing or Skype facilities. I know from experience that meeting at least once in person is absolutely essential to enable us to begin to build a relationship based on honesty, truth, openness and trust.

I encourage my clients to keep in touch by telephone and email between face-to-face sessions.

How long will the coaching take and how much will it cost?

How long we work together and the number and frequency of sessions is determined when we scope out and agree the assignment at the contracting stage. I will be able to confirm my recommendation for the number of sessions and length of engagement at this time.

Typically an executive and leadership coaching programme runs for between 6 to 9 sessions over a period of between 6 and 9 months. With a new client, I recommend a mid-point review and in all assignments, we will hold an exit review meeting to evaluate what has been achieved, what is still to be done and agree next steps as appropriate. If the number of sessions is extended, we will re-contract to agree the new topics to be covered and agree outcomes required.  I am against open ended coaching relationships to prevent conscious or unconscious dependency on me.

I will provide a fixed fee quotation for your investment which will include the whole package of initial scoping and contracting, face-to-face sessions, telephone and email support and evaluation and review meetings. Please call or email me on 07597 674328 or email me philip@philipperry.com to discuss this further.

Philip is great at asking the right 'killer' questions that are designed to produce clarity and direction during moments of disruption, change or opportunity. Philip's insight of people behaviour would be an asset to any senior individual or business in transition.

Robin Johnson, MD, Ovation XL LLP

I continue to seek Philip’s wisdom when faced with a complex or challenging situation. He possesses an extraordinary ability to engage with any issue very quickly, encouraging his client to think through the situation and implement a practical solution.
